William Howard Taft typed letter signed, dated 3 April 1913, less than a month after leaving the Presidency. Composed on Taft's personal stationery from his home in New Haven, Connecticut, he writes to Father J.A. Zahm at the Holy Cross Academy in Washington DC, ''...My dear Father Zahm / I thank you cordially for the kind invitation which you extend to me to deliver the commencement address at Notre Dame on the evening of June 16th, but regret exceedingly that I shall be unable to accept. As you know, I have just come to New Haven to take up my new duties at Yale, and I feel that the lectures which I shall have to prepare will consume all of my time so that I shall be unable to accept any outside engagements...[signed] Wm H Taft''. Single page letter measures 7'' x 9.25''. Horizontal fold and very light soiling, mostly to verso. Very good plus condition.
