Queen Elizabeth II autograph letter signed, dated 8 May 1953, just one month before she was crowned Queen. Written on Buckingham Palace stationery, letter was sent to Lewis Douglas, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1947 to 1950 and whose family formed a close relationship with the royal family. Letter reads in full: ''Dear Mr. Douglas - I was so very delighted to receive the wonderful surprise of the stockings from yourself and Mrs. Douglas - and I am so very grateful to you both for your kind thought of me. I hope you have had a pleasant time over here, though it has been such a short stay and I do hope we shall have a chance of meeting next time you come over here. With renewed thanks to you both and many messages. Yours sincerely Elizabeth R''. 2pp. letter (front and verso) is accompanied by its original envelope, with postage stamps from Buckingham Palace. Letter measures 4.75'' x 7.5'' and envelope measures 5.5'' x 4.25''. One mailing fold and one pin-sized stain to verso of letter. Tear to upper left corner of envelope, where letter was opened. Very good plus.
