Clarence Darrow typed letter signed regarding the end of Prohibition. Written upon his personal stationery and dated 15 December 1933, just ten days after the 18th amendment prohibiting the sale and consumption of alcohol was repealed. Letter is addressed to Dr. Forrest R. Black, a law professor and colleague of Darrow's who shared similar views on Prohibition. Letter reads, ''My Dear Mr. Forest Black / I was very glad to hear from you. Have been wondering whether anything had befallen you. Your letter interested me especially on account of what you say about the old matter that we discussed so much: how to get rid of prohibition. There cannot be any question in my mind but what the negative regulation will work. It would have been adopted excepting that the moralists who are prohibitionists got the idiotic part of our crowd to protest how law-abiding they were. Of course, they were all drinking boot-legger liquor at same time, but there is nothing quite so strong in this world as hypocricy [sp]. It is mighty good to have you in a position where you can test this question, and I wish you all luck...[signed] Clarence Darrow. He continues with a postscript: ''I have not yet had a glass of beer since it became legal, nor a drink of liquor since the right to it came back''. One page letter measures 7.25'' x 10.5''. Minor toning. Very good.
