Clarence Darrow autograph letter signed with excellent content on Prohibition. Upon his personal stationery dated 19 August, letter is addressed to Dr. Forrest R. Black, a law professor and colleague of Darrow's. Darrow advised Black on the best route to getting his essays on prohibition published. Letter reads, ''Dear Mr. Black / Sorry I can't get down to Ohio while you are there but am afraid I can not. I sent the story to Collier's and they returned it on the ground that they were fighting on the ground of repealing the amendment. I then wrote to Vanity Fair about it and they said they would like it I [illegible] send it to them. I have been thinking of your story. I would avoid speaking of it in any 'negative' way of selling as it is a negative license or any such thing. I think I investigated the expression. But Americans are first of all hypocrites and will not fight for anything that seems to be illegal. So I think it should be given out as a straight legitimate way to handle liquor by the states after the repeal of the Volstead Act. I will keep you posted about my story. Truly Clarence Darrow / Wish you would come back this way''. Measures 7.25'' x 10.25''. Toning and one small crease to bottom right. Very good.
