General Henry Halleck Civil War-dated autograph letter signed ''H.W. Halleck'' as General in Chief. Dated 17 November 1862 from Washington, letter on official ''Head-Quarters of the Army'' letterhead is addressed to Iowa Governor Samuel Kirkwood, in full: ''Lt. Col. Sullivan reports to day that all Iowa troops captured at Shiloh have been exchanged: That the Confederate authorities have never reported any prisoners in their hands at Belmont. It was supposed that Genl. Grant had effected their exchange many months ago. The matter will be further inquired into.'' Signed ''H.W. Halleck / Genl. in Chief''. Single page letter measures 8'' x 10''. Two minor folds, else fine condition.
