Chamberlain writes a partial letter to Maine's Secretary of State, E.B. French, in part: ''...direct, as I think you wished me to put it into your hands. I have kept it a few days in order to see the officers of the Regt. I have been assigned to the 1st Brigade 1st Division 5th Corps for the present. I feel the effect of my wounds very much but think I can stand it. They did not seem very sorry to see me back. With kind remembrances to Mrs. French, very truly yours, J.L. Chamberlain / Nov. 30th. Headquarters / 1st Divisions / 5th Army Corps''. Letter on one page measures 5'' x 7.75'', mounted to a piece of cardboard paper measuring 8'' x 10.5''.
