Dwight D. Eisenhower autograph letter signed as Commander of the Allied Invasion of North Africa. Just days after the commencement of Operation Torch, its General writes from his subterranean headquarters in Gibraltar. Dating the letter 11 November [1942] he writes on Allied Force Headquarters stationery to his wife, Mamie, in full: ''Darling: Could you have ever imagined that your picture (together with OUR son's) would one day stand upon the desk of an office in a headquarters, 500 feet underground? Well there is where it is this minute - facing me. I just dictated a very brief letter to Johnny. I'm sure that he must be getting the soldier 'feel' himself - so I like to write to him from that standpoint as well as from that of pure affection. I'm certainly proud of him! We are well - tell Ruth that Butch continues to be my life saver and my constant companion! He rooms next to me, with Guenther, but everybody is so d--- busy we don't get much time for idle conversation. But, from this scrawl you'll know I love you & miss you, even in this dungeon!! Always yours - Love / Ike''. With original envelope. Single-page letter measures 8'' x 10.5''. Creasing, else near fine.
