Dwight D. Eisenhower autograph letter signed from Europe during WWII. He writes to his wife, Mamie, on 11 March 1944, in part: ''My darling - Today I made a trip to a big military school [Sandhurst in England]...took a review & made a speech. I couldn't be surprised that you'd sometimes see a picture of it because there were cameras everywhere. It was a nice occasion, but I got rather cold; moreover I'm afraid my speech wasn't much. It's hard to think of the right thing to say on the spur of the moment. I desperately miss you. Why we have to have wars to separate families and cause all the anguish that they do is sometimes impossible for me to understand. This is particularly true when I get as lonesome for you as I am this minute. How I wish I could see you for a minute or even ten seconds. I think that all these trials and tribulations must come upon the world because of some great wickedness; yet one could feel that man's mere intelligence, to say nothing of his spiritual perceptions would find some way of eliminating war. But man has been trying to do so for many hundreds of years, and his failure just adds more room for pessimism when a man gets really low! Well sweet, be good - especially to yourself. I want to see you in fine health when finally I get home from the war. As always, your / Ike / P.S. I love you!'' Despite this endearing love letter, Eisenhower allegedly fell in love with his female driver, Kay Summersby, while serving in Europe during the war. 8'' x 10.5'' letter runs 2pp. Written in ink on ruled stationery. Creasing, else near fine.
