Melvin Purvis typed memorandum signed ''M.H. Purvis'', dated 4 April 1934 from Chicago. Purvis was one of the foremost FBI agents during the 1930's crackdown of organized crime in Chicago. Memorandum lays out responsibilities and roles of the Department of the Interior and the FBI and further outlines two New Deal programs, the Public Works Administration and the short-lived Civil Works Administration. Reads in part: ''Reference is made to Division letter dated February 1, 1934, advising that investigations growing out of Public Works Administration and Civil Works Administration projects were to be handled by the Division of Investigations, Department of the Interior, with the exception of impersonation cases which, of course, are to continue under the jurisdiction of this Division...Upon receipt of complaints of this character in the future, an inquiry should be made to determine definitely that the project involved is one falling within the scope of the work of the Civil Works Administration, and in the event the case has been so identified, it should be assigned for investigation...'' Document on one page measures 8'' x 10.5'' with two holes punched at top and minor toning throughout. Near fine.
