Rene Gagnon WWII autograph letter signed three times as a Private First Class in the US Marine Corps. Gagnon was one of the six soldiers pictured in ''Raising The Flag on Iwo Jima'', the iconic image of the turning point of the war and one of the most famous photographs of all time. From an undisclosed location in the ''Central Pacific'', he writes to his sweetheart and future wife Pauline Harnois. Dated 21 October 1944, letter reads, [uncorrected for minor errors] in part, ''...Remember the swell time we used to have...dancing on Saturday night...R.A. Gagnon...If I could just be back in the mill now, I wouldn't fight with the boss anymore, I sorta got used to taking orders now, I'd be satisfied with working night hours without stopping, just as long as I could walk to work and back with you...Don't worry about me...Rene / P.S. Give my regards to your Mom & Dad...R.A. Gagnon''. Accompanied by the censor-stamped mailing envelope made out in Gagnon's hand in ink, including his name and return address. 2pp. letter in ink on 2 sheets of plain stationery measures 8.5'' x 11''. Toning and creasing, else near fine.
