Dwight D. Eisenhower typed letter signed as President, dated 18 January 1956, on ''White House / Personal'' stationery. Here, Eisenhower writes to his older brother Edgar regarding the Constitution. Reads in part: ''Dear Ed: It is true I had agreed to make no objection to an amendment that would read: 'Any provision of a treaty or other international agreement which conflicts with any provision of this Constitution shall be of no force or effect.' Since giving that approval, I have learned that Senator Bricker and some others have walked out on agreement...You imply that if some people -- many of whom have not the slightest idea of what they are talking about -- do not have their way, then they will not exercise their Constitutional rights and privileges of voting in order to correct the situation. This means the failure of self-government. More especially, within the framework that you make the statement, it means that the extreme left wingers will be back in the saddle. Yet you talk as if only the 'so-called Republicans who will be retiring from public life' will be the ones who will be hurt. For my part, my attempt to do something for my country in the post I now occupy has cost me a lot in health, much in wear and tear on mind and disposition, to say nothing of some hundreds of thousand dollars. So far as material things are concerned, others have sacrificed much more. This latter fact I mention only because this factor seems so tremendously important to so many of the people who are arguing as you do.'' Signed ''D.E.'' in black ink. Letter measures 7'' x 10.25'' on two pages, with two holes punched at top and a faint line in red pencil. Near fine.
