Quincy A. Gillmore autograph letter signed ''Q. A. Gillmore Brig. Genl.'' and dated 13 May 1863 from Albany, New York. Letter is addressed to Adjutant General [John T.] Sprague as a letter of recommendation and reads in part: ''...I take pleasure in introducing to your acquaintance my friend Col. Dayton, who visits Albany on business connected with the raising of new troops for the war, under the auspices of the War Department...Col. Dayton is a worthy officer, has taken an active part in this war, and has been the recipient of frequent and high commissions from his commanding officers...'' One page document measures 8'' x 10'' Tear along fold, archivally repaired to verso. Overall near fine.
