Ernest Hemingway handwritten postcard from a 1956 trip to Spain with his wife Mary, signed with his famous nickname, ''Papa''. Both Hemingway and his wife fill out and sign portions of the postcard in their own hand. During this particular trip, Hemingway met Basque writer Pio Baroja who was terminally ill and died soon after their meeting. Hemingway, too, became very sick during this European tour and was treated for high blood pressure, liver disease and arteriosclerosis. Postcard is from the Hotel Felipe II, at San Lorenzo de El Escorial, or the Royal Seat Hotel, and features the hotel pool on front. The Hemingways write to longtime Cuban friend, Roberto Herrera in full: ''Oct. 2nd Dear Monstro (sic) We speak of you every day, and how much you'd love it here - Abrazos - Mary'' and, in Ernest Hemingway's hand, ''Am writing a letter. Hope you had good vacation. Saw Juanito M. yesterday. Un abrazo, Papa.'' Card measures 5.5'' x 3.5'', postmarked from Madrid, 2 October 1956. Very good to near fine. From the personal property of Roberto Herrera Sotolongo, longtime friend and personal secretary of Hemingway.
