John Hancock document signed. Manuscript bears the founding father's famous "John Hancock" at the bottom, in the largest lettering on the page. Partially-printed document is dated 21 November 1788 and headed, "Commonwealth of Massachusetts / In Senate". Addressed specifically to the Commanding Officer at Castle Island, order reads in part, "…His Excellency The Governor…hereby requested to desist from reinforcing the garrison on Castle Island…and to give order that those who are now there should retire…" Also signed in a secretarial hand, "John Hancock" at center. Single-page document on a sheet of card-style paper measures 8" x 12.75". Uniform toning, mild dampstaining to edges, and some tape repairs and notations to verso, else near fine, especially given age.
