Clarence Darrow typed letter signed. Upon his personal stationery, Darrow's letter to Mr. Harry M. Beardsley, in care of the Chicago Daily News is dated 6 March 1936, two years before his death. Letter reads in full, ''Please excuse delaying acknowledging the most welcome and appreciated biography written by you, and inscribed to me, - the gift of our mutual friend, Mr. Gifford Ernest, - 'Joseph Smith and His Mormon Empire' at last begun and already certain to enjoy beyond anything I have recently stumbled upon. I shall not lay it down till finished, I know, and then I shall want Mr. Ernest and you to come out for a visit with me, if you will, at any time that will be convenient to your leisure hours. I am sorry to be so tardy with this note, but being a man of leisure means laziness, partly, and I let the little things of life keep me busier than ever the bigger ones did, I think. Anyhow, Mr. Gifford and you have given me a great treat; The style, the directness with which you state your story is fascinating, and I anticipate a pleasant acquaintance with the author, very soon after I finish this book. Sincerely and cordially yours, [signed] Clarence Darrow''. Single-page letter measures 6.75'' x 10.25''. Typed in purple on purple headed stationery and also signed in purple ink, letter has been examined under 200x magnification with a ProScope brand microscope and determined authentic. Creasing, else near fine.
