Civil War Confederate soldier autograph letter signed from William R. Clayton of the 3rd Georgia Cavalry. Dated 2 June 1864, letter reads in part, ''...They made a charge the other night and got in 50 feet of our men before they fired on them but soon our gallant boys rose up and gave them a fire and then a yell and then another fire and then charged them, this threw them into confusion and they scattered like sheep, leaving all their dead in our possession and the wounded, which is immense, all this was in the dark, we are well prepared for them when they feel like coming...W R Clayton''. Letter runs 2pp. on a sheet of ruled ledger paper measuring 4.5'' x 13''. Toning, creasing and a tear from the right edge inwards, else near fine.
