Civil War document of official enlistment into the Union Army. Here Abraham S. Smith, age 44 of Harrisburg, PA voluntarily joins the war on 5 September 1864, eventually serving in the 208th Pennsylvania Infantry until the end of the war. Reads in part: ''...Enlisted for the term of one year and entitled to $100 Government Bounty...'' Countersigned by the enlistment officer who declared that the soldier was ''entirely sober when enlisted''. Sobriety upon enlistment was a practical concern for the U.S. Army, as brokers would often get men drunk, enlist them and then take their bounty money. 2pp on one sheet measuring 7.75'' x 10.25''. Light foxing and staining, with aged folds, else very good.
