Charles IX, King of France, Document Signed, ''Charles.'' One page, front and verso, 8.25'' x 11.75'', Paris, October 9, 1563, in French (not translated). Charles's reign was dominated by the French wars of religion, which pitted the Huguenots, the French adherents of Calvinism against the Catholic majority. Initially Charles adopted the role of peacemaker. Facing popular hostility against this policy of appeasement, Charles allowed the massacre of all Huguenot leaders who gathered in Paris for his sister's royal wedding at the instigation of his mother Catherine de' Medici. This event, known as the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, that actually lasted several weeks, killed somewhere between 5,000 and 30,000 Protestants. The document has folds, light soiling, even toning and a stamp from a previous collection.
