Script for ''Tortilla Flat'', the film adaptation of the John Steinbeck novel starring Spencer Tracy, John Garfield, Frank Morgan, Akim Tamiroff, Sheldon Leonard and Hedy Lamarr. Vintage MGM screenplay features a riveting foreword prescribing stylistic do's and don'ts for the film, an interesting addition since the film's ending departed radically from that in Steinbeck's novel. Foreword reads in part, ''...It is essentially a comic story, yet it may not be played in the hard, bright light of comedy...Above all the primitiveness of the backgrounds and their essential poverty must never be allowed to appear squalid...good people...of courtesy beyond politeness...''.
