Jane Russell wardrobe from ''The Outlaw'', the controversial film that launched her career in Hollywood as a sex symbol. Russell stars in Howard Hughes' 1943 western as Rio McDonald, an attractive woman caught in a love triangle with gunfighters Doc Holliday and Billy The Kid, played by Walter Huston and Jack Buetel respectively. The film caused a stir (partly generated by Howard Hughes intentionally as publicity for the movie) for its violation of the Production Code rules against the suggestion of sex without punitive consequence. Navy blue woven dress features short sleeves and fringe at the hemline, cuffs and across the chest and back. Dress was custom made for Russell by United Costume of Hollywood and her name is written on their label alongside production number 936. Dress snaps up the front. Interestingly, this dress was remade for a reshoot as a skirt and jacket, which were more revealing. Measures 18'' across the chest. Near fine. With a COA from Warner Brothers stating the costume was purchased by the Warner Brothers costume department in the 1950's from the costume house and then transferred to the Warner Brothers corporate archive in the early 1990's.
