Land sale document from Madison County, Illinois dated 1837, bearing a handwritten addendum pertaining to the nascent legal concept of married women's property rights. Partially-printed document contains a handwritten segment at the bottom verifying the wife's consent to sell real estate jointly with her husband. Document pre-dates the enactment of the Married Women's Property Acts in Illinois by two years. Segment reads in full, ''...and the said Sally, wife of the said George Smith, having the contents of said deed Explained to her and by me examined separate and apart from her husband acknowledged that she had signed and executed the same, freely, voluntarily and without any compulsion of her said husband...'' 2pp. agreement on a single sheet of card-style stationery measures 8'' x 12.25''. Creasing, tears and separation to folds, else very good. An intriguing example of legal consideration provided for women before it was required by law.
