19th Century bowler hat. Also called a ''derby'', this distinctive style, an icon of the era was created in 1849 by Thomas and William Bowler in response to demand for a gamekeeper's hat that would stay on better than the top hat when the gamekeeper was on horseback passing through areas of foliage with low-hanging branches. Fine black felt hat bears the maker's label of C. W. Poulton of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on the interior lining of the crown. Hat features a brown leather interior hat band bearing the maker's seal in gilt and monogrammed in perforation with the initials, ''FLD''. Some wear to interior hatband and separation from the sides, else near fine.
