Abraham Lincoln's Secretary of State William H. Seward's son signs a typed letter discussing the aftermath of the assassination plot. Dated 19 August 1901, William H. Seward Jr. informs prosecution witness (who boarded at Mary Surratt's home) Louis Weichmann of his family members' wellbeing since the tragedy, including his brother who was injured during the attempted assassination of Seward. Letter reads in full, ''Dear Sir:- I have your letter of the 15th, inst., and in reply would say that my sister Frances J. Seward died in Washington October 29th, 1866. My brother Frederick W. Seward who was seriously injured at the time of attempted assassination of Secretary Seward recovered and is still living at his residence, Montrose, Westchester Co., N.Y., he and I now being the only survivors of Mr. Seward's immediate family. Our oldest brother Col. Augustus H. Seward, was also slightly wounded by Payne the assassin. he died Sept. 11th, 1876. Very Truly Yours, [signed] William H. Seward'' Letter measures 8.5'' x 11''. A correction in black pen by an unknown hand covers a typo. Toning, paper clip impression and a small tear to the top edge, else near fine condition.
