Very rare official White House china plate commissioned by President Franklin D. Roosevelt for the 1939 World's Fair, held in Flushing Park, New York. Made by Lenox, one of the United States' only producers of ''bone china'', which is distinguished for its white luminosity and chip resistance. In 1935 at the height of the Great Depression, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt spearheaded a campaign to use American china, ordering 1,722 pieces of Lenox china in October 1934. Five years later at the World's Fair, this plate was on display in the U.S. Pavilion at the Fair, and then used for a formal dinner hosted by the President. After the Fair, the china was incorporated into the Roosevelt Service at the White House. Plate depicts the Great Seal of the U.S. at center in gilt, with a border of gold stars encircling a gold band. Back of plate has the original Lenox logo and applied gold numbers, ''1803/P-362-A'' to itemize the plate in the set. Plate has a 10.5'' circumference and is in fine condition.
