Ernest Hemingway's very own bullfighting archive used during the summer of 1959, the time chronicled by Hemingway in his last work, ''The Dangerous Summer.'' All items were given by Hemingway to his friend and editor, A.E. Hotchner, and lot includes four LOA's from Hotchner for each item in the archive, comprising: (1) Ornate white and gold matador costume worn by famed matador Antonio Ordonez. The suit was also worn by Hotchner in an incident retold by Hemingway in ''The Dangerous Summer'' and subsequently gifted by Hemingway to Hotchner. (2) Bullfighting sword from the same occasion, of which Hotcher writes in his LOA, ''...The sword which you have was used to fight the bull that day with the muletta. It was used to support the muletta & is not a killing sword. At the end of the day, Hemingway obtained this sword from Ordonez & gave it to me as a keepsake...'' (3) Sterling silver trophy with bull and matador figures on an oval base. Documented by Hotchner in his LOA, ''The silver bullfight trophy (marked with several...stars) was presented to me by Hemingway on the night I appeared in the bullring...'' (4) Hemingway's lucky chestnut talisman, originally gifted to Hemingway by Hotchner. Hemingway carried it with him for 11 years and presciently returned it to Hotchner a month before his suicide. Hotchner refers to the chestnut in his biography, ''Papa Hemingway,'' as ''the horse chestnut from Paris''. Finally, the lot contains a softcover copy of ''Dangerous Summer'' in which these items are recorded for eternity. Lot is near fine. An incredibly poignant and personal archive of the great author.
