James Buchanan autograph letter signed as Pennsylvania Senator. Datelined Lancaster, Pennsylvania, 3 August 1840, it reads in full to Mrs. Sarah Obu: ''I regret to inform you that I have no money at present to loan. Had I received your letter a few days sooner it would have been in my power to oblige you; & rest assured it would have afforded me very great pleasure to oblige the widow & children of my old & valued friend. Your servant, James Buchanan''. He would be appointed Secretary of State five years later on his way to Executive office in 1857. Single page letter measures 7.75'' x 9.75''. Foxing and chipping to left edge, with adhesive residue to corners, else near fine.
