Jasper Francis Cropsey landscape sketch signed. Cropsey is on a short list of the first generation of Hudson River School artists, who created romantic depictions of the American frontier, especially in New York's Hudson River Valley. Pencil and gouache sketch on paper is signed ''J.F.C. 1866'' in pencil at the lower left. That same year Cropsey, as part of a group of 11 artists, formed ''The American Society of Painters in Water Colors''. Cropsey is known for his bold use of color, especially in his autumnal pieces. Sketch's viewable area measures 10'' x 6'', matted and framed in a gold leaf wood frame to an overall size of 15.75'' x 12''. Chip to lower left corner of frame and a few flecks of foxing to sketch, not examined out of frame. Piece was personally owned by legendary actress Helen Hayes.
