American artist Garth Williams' preliminary ''Charlotte's Web'' illustration. In this pencil sketch, he depicts Fern's reaction to her father's plan to kill the piglet who would become her pet, Wilbur. Williams based Fern on his own daughter. He initials the 8.5'' x 11'' drawing ''GW'' at the bottom right and numbers it ''3.16330'' on the verso. Minor creasing, else near fine condition.
