James Garfield letter signed ''J. A. Garfield'' as a U.S. representative from Ohio, dated 2 April 1878. Letter on House of Representatives letterhead is addressed to a Reverend Isaac Winans of Freedom, Ohio, regarding his inquiry into a Revolutionary War pension. Reads in part: ''...The Committee on Pensions has reported favorably on the bill granting you a pension and I hope it will become a law. I shall do what I can to secure its passage...'' Letter on one page measures 5'' x 8'' and is mounted to card stock to an overall size of 6'' x 8.75''. Two folds from mailing, else near fine.
