Arthur Ashe's personally owned Principal's Citation award from a high school in Richmond, Virginia, where Ashe grew up. Armstrong-Kennedy High School honors Ashe with two certificates. One dated 5 December 1985, reads in part, ''The Faculty...With Grateful Appreciation Acknowledges The Contribution Made by Arthur Robert Ashe, Jr. in Helping This School Effect a Program of Excellence in Education...'' Certificate bears a seal and is signed by school administrators. The recommendation certificate boasts an eloquent paragraph praising Ashe, ''...as an Athlete, a Statesman, an Earnest Pursuer of Academic Endeavors, a Man of Skill and Indomitable Will...'' Certificates measure 11'' x 8.5''. Housed in a black faux-leather cover with gilt lettering, award is mounted and recommendation is tucked into violet satin corners behind a transparent protective cover. Abrasions and a tear to the cover exterior, else near fine.
