Arthur Ashe's 1972 day planner. Journal was consistently used by Ashe all year to remember appointments and record the important events in his busy life at the height of his career. Ashe's concise entries serve as reminders for his various public engagements, people to call and notes to himself. Also tucked inside the diary is a handwritten note by Ashe, ostensibly written in 1972, outlining "Pan-Africanism" as Ashe saw it. He lists six characteristics of Pan-Africanism with several bullets listed: "1.) Similarity to Black Power…65% Negroes not separatists at all / 2.) Idealistic; Unreal…old animosities…rejection…5.) Increase in communication, education breeds tolerance…" In the 1972 diary itself, Ashe notes hundreds of meetings including several mentions of "Cosby" and filming with him, his commitments to a Coca Cola endorsement appearance, a players meeting at the U.S. Open Club, an ATA [American Tennis Association] banquet, the LA Open and the Davis Cup, with press conferences in Century City and Orange County. On 23 March he writes a pro/con list of participating in a particular tennis tournament or tour (which one is not noted) with interesting details such as "Bad Scheduling (clay, S.F., clay, S.F.)…balls too light…touring referee to settle all arguments (Tennis or otherwise)…prize money breakdown bad…Las Vegas - why must tournaments be = $50,000". Ashe hand-writes his itinerary throughout: "Press Conference / demo / autographs…" He also makes a note, "Savings account for ATP [Association of Tennis Professionals] money". Ashe was instrumental in that organization's formation that year as an advocate of tennis players' rights. Rotterdam WTC in its first year here makes a prominent appearance; Ashe won the tournament. Following its mention Ashe writes, "Rome WTC Finals", "Israeli Olympic Dinner" and "Get ILTF [International Lawn Tennis Federation] Rules". He marks the day of the Indy 500, "African Lib Day", various tennis tournaments such as the Davis Cup and Doral, and writes personal notes to himself such as "Racket for Bobby Shriver & Gary Tobias". He also writes various to do lists, such as "Cassettes / Rackets Strung / Expense Sheets / Tennis Column", and frequently lists names and numbers of people with some of those crossed-through. Notations in Ashe's hand appear on most pages of the spiral-bound Day-At-A-Glance book. Features a black faux-leather soft cover. Measures 5.75" x 8.25". In very good condition, with mild wear and rubbing to pencil inscriptions. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe's widow. A personal record of each significant day in one of the tennis legend's greatest years.
