Arthur Ashe's Wimbledon medal from 1971. Medal honors Ashe's 2nd place finish with R.D. Ralston in Men's Doubles. Lettering around the outside reads, ''THE LAWN TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS'' and surrounds engraved print reading, ''MENS DOUBLES / Runners-up / A.R. ASHE / and / R.D. RALSTON / 1971.'' Silver medal bears an F & S maker's mark, that of British jeweler Fattorini & Sons. Reverse features a figural relief design of Athena, here personifying the virtues of athletic competition. In her left hand she balances a tiny figure of victory goddess Nike, while her right hand crowns the Lawn Tennis globe icon with a laurel sprig. Medal measures 1.5'' in diameter. Discoloration to figural side and tarnishing to engraved side, else near fine. Housed in its original red leather 2.5'' x 3.5'' hinged case with red velvet lining, in good condition. An impressive memento from Ashe as an up-and-coming Wimbledon contender. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe's widow.
