4 March 1898 Certificate of Discharge issued to fireman L. Roberts and signed by Captain Edward J. Smith, who went on to captain The Titanic. The certificate is signed lightly by Smith and stamp-dated 3 March 1898 on the Master line, and with an ''X'' on the Seaman line by the apparently-illiterate Roberts. The 7.75'' x 6'' certificate has a Board of Trade Watermark. Light wear, a piece of masking tape present and negligible paper loss on blank verso. Very good condition.
