Letter from WIA Second Lieutenant Chancy C. Ackley of the 207th Pennsylvania Infantry, Company D. Written in ink and datelined ''Head quarters Co D. 207th Reg PV / Dec 7th 1864,'' letter reads in part: ''...We are before Pettersbrug about 6 miles towards Sitty Point from where we were when I last wrote On the Rail Road. We have built us good quarters & now laying in reserve about one half mile from the Johnies. There is some shelling near here...I think that there will be a rite smart fight soon We are all well at present except Bry. He remains about the same We have a splendid House & a good fire plase in it...I will give you a description of our House & the way we built it. You see there is no tents used in the field but every soldier has one tent blanket 5 ft square with buttons on 3 sides so that we can button as many to gether as we are a mind to. We use these for the roof of our Houses & some of the boys use logs & build them as log houses...and split out slabs about 9 1/2 inches thick & 6 feet long...a pretty good size house...But we expect to leave it verry soon...We are willing to stay or go where we are ordered. But are contented hear...'' The 207th Pennsylvania Infantry met the enemy at Dabney's Mills, Hatcher's Run, Fort Stedman and Petersburg. Chancy C. Ackley was commissioned into Company D on 7 September 1864. He was wounded at Petersburg on 2 April 1865 and mustered out on 31 May 1865 at Alexandria, Virginia. Letter measures 5'' x 8''. Mild overall wrinkling and scant soiling to rear leaf. Near fine condition.
