Eugene O'Neill autograph letter signed on ''Brook Farm / Ridgefield Connecticut'' cardstock stationery, where the acclaimed playwright moved with his second wife, writer Agnes Boulton, in 1922. Amusing letter, undated, is addressed to a Mr. Winslow with O'Neill responding to a fantastical idea proposed by Winslow that a Bohemian community has emerged in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where O'Neill kept a summer home. O'Neill humorously corrects this claim and points out that Winslow must be confusing Provincetown with Greenwich Village. Letter reads: ''Dear Mr. Winslow: I'm sorry but I can't give you any data. To be quite frank, I've never heard of the Bohemian Republic at P'town although I'm an old resident. It must be a hoax. On the whole P'Town is almost as Bohemian as a Sunday matinee with the Queen Esther Circle in New London -- but most of us up there do work like hell, if that's Bohemian. No, if there's any Republic organized on the Cape I've yet to hear of it. You must have confused P'Town with Greenwich Village, N.Y. There's very little resemblance. I'm sorry I can't give you a story but there just simply isn't any to give. Sincerely, Eugene O'Neill.'' Letter, measuring 5.5'' x 3.25'' on 2pp. front and verso, has small cataloguing numbers in pencil on both sides, one pinhole on right corner and minor uneven toning on verso, else near fine condition.
