Very scarce first edition, first printing of ''Desert Night'' by Captain W.E. Johns. London: John Hamilton Ltd.: 1938. The scarcest of all Johns' titles, it is one of only eleven copies known to exist. Sun dial is present on the spine, as called for in the first edition. This romantic novel by the famed English writer of ''Biggles'' heroic books features British protagonist Haydn Marlow against a backdrop of cultures clashing in the Middle East. Espionage and romance are intertwined nicely to produce a novel of adventure and suspense. The popularity of Johns' books has continued and even expanded into the 21st century; this book was re-issued in 2001 as ''Desert Adventures.'' Overall in very good condition, with light soiling and shelf wear; a book club stamp and two date stamps of 25 May 1938 also appear on the title page. Binding is tight and there are no tears.
