Handsome set of early 19th century oil paintings of George and Martha Washington. Bust portraits, circa 1830, of America's first President and First Lady are unsigned but stylistically based upon the classic artist Gilbert Stuart, whose famous rendition of George Washington appears on today's dollar bill. Both pieces are oil on canvas in the original frames, and both have been relined and feature newer stretchers. Visages of the couple come in matching gilt wooden frames measuring 28.25'' x 33.5''. Expected crackling to paint. Barely detectable repair to George at bottom right of the canvas. Some chipping to the finish on the frame around George with more chipping to finish of frame around Martha. Very good overall.
