William Howard Taft typed letter signed as President. Dated 11 June 1912 on official White House stationery and marked ''personal'' at the top, letter is written to Evening Post publisher Oswald Garrison Villard. Only a week after Taft beat out Theodore Roosevelt for the Presidential nomination, he writes: ''...I have yours of June 10th in respect to Cuba and General Crowder. There is another man who is anxious to go to Cuba, and that is Beekman Winthrop. He is the one whom I attempted to put into Cuba when Mr. Roosevelt and Mr. Root overruled me under circumstances that were rather humiliating to Winthrop. He would have made a better governor than Magoon. Without deciding the question, however, I recognize very fully the many qualifications of Crowder for a temporary governorship there, and I shall not act without the fullest consideration of his fitness if occasion arises. I am very hopeful that we may go through without the necessity for going into Cuba during my administration. I hate to think of the possibility. [signed] Wm. H. Taft''. Taft had acted as Governor of Cuba while he was Roosevelt's Secretary of War in 1906. Single-page letter on card-style stationery measures 7'' x 8.75''. Near fine.
