President John F. Kennedy signs an official document, dated 12 May 1962, appointing Dr. Walter Johnson of Illinois ''a Member of the United States Advisory Commission on International Education and Cultural Affairs''. The President signs in black ink, ''John Kennedy''. Intact embossed State Department paper seal is affixed to left side of document. Secretary of State Dean Rusk countersigns. Johnson was a historian who, as a member of the commission, authored a report on American studies abroad that earned him widespread recognition. On the day of this appointment, JFK ordered U.S. military forces to Thailand in preparation for a possible attack from Laos during the Vietnam War. Overall toning to 19.25'' x 15.25'' document, else near fine. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
