Prominent 19th Century U.S. political figure Lewis Cass autograph letter signed. His penmanship is difficult to decipher, but his signature ''Lewis Cass'' is clear. He writes to Elwood Evans, datelining it Washington, 7 March 1847, the year before his defeat by Polk in the 1848 presidential election. His support of the Doctrine of Popular Sovereignty, which left slavery to state government discretion, would have likely changed the course of history had he been elected President. 3pp. letter on card-style stationery measures 5'' x 8''. Creasing, else near fine.
