Fabric from the wing of the first airplane, the Wright Flyer, which made its debut flight at Kitty Hawk on 17 December 1903. Large swatch of fabric measures approximately 1.375'' x 1.5'', taken from the wing of the airplane and personally saved by Orville Wright after the plane's restoration. Fabric is affixed to a certificate with statement by Lester D. Gardner, Editor of Aviation and Aeronautical Engineering, and close friend of Orville Wright, who gave the fabric to individuals in the aeronautical community. Certificate states that this swatch was given to Joseph R. Crotti, Director of the California Department of Aeronautics. Certificate measures approximately 8'' x 10''. Some toning to certificate. Not examined out of frame but appears in very good condition.
