John F. Kennedy autograph manuscript unsigned, with interesting content on ''special groups'' profiting at the expense of the general public, and the need to educate the American people. Document has the number ''5'' in pencil at top, followed by Kennedy's handwriting in blue ballpoint. Document reads in full,

''Acheson

'There are so many opportunities for special groups to profit at the general expense that we cannot expect concern for the public welfare to be sufficient as the sole restraint upon them. So even though greater governmental direction could also have harmful consequences which would be hard to prevent, it is nevertheless essential.

'But they (the people) can never do what is necessary until they understand what is necessary, and why, and never will understand that until their leaders in government, business and labor are willing to tell them.''

On the verso, Kennedy has written ''Calhoun Clay'', which is referenced in accompanying paperwork from Theodore Sorensen. Sorensen states that Kennedy co-chaired a special committee to choose portraits of Senators that would hang outside the Senate chamber, and that Senators Calhoun and Clay were chosen. Manuscript therefore likely dates to Kennedy's Senate days, circa mid-1950s. Manuscript measures 8.625'' x 11''. Single fold and light creasing, overall near fine.
