John Adams naval document signed as President, dated 11 July 1799 in the heat of the French-American Quasi-War that was fought entirely at sea. Adams here appoints Daniel Todd Patterson to Midshipmen in U.S. Navy. Countersigned by Secretary of the Navy Benjamin Stoddert. Partly-printed vellum document measures 11.25'' x 8.25'', with red wax-backed paper seal. Folds, irregularly trimmed sides, and light foxing. Overall very good plus condition.
