Scarce campaign flag for James Polk & George Dallas for the 1844 presidential election. Campaign mementos from the Polk-Dallas campaign are notoriously scarce, with flags amongst the most prized among them. In fact, in the definitive reference book, ''Threads of History'', the author Herb Collins shows only four textiles for the 1844 Polk campaign, compared to 29 for his defeated rival Henry Clay. Cloth flag features 26 stars in the canton, with red and white stripes, the red having faded to orange-brown. ''Polk & Dallas'' stenciled in blue on the white stripes. Flag is nailed in nine spots to the hoist, which measures 36.625'' long. Flag itself measures approximately 28.25'' x 25.25'' with unhemmed edges. Moderate soiling, and some small holes throughout. One larger hole at top of canton and a few tears throughout. One of the few opportunities to acquire a flag banner for the winner of the 1844 Presidential election. New to auction, from the collection of the Walden, New York Historical Society.
