James Monroe autograph letter signed, dated 12 December 1830, five years after serving as President (referred to as ''Chief Magistrate'' in his letter) and approximately seven months before his passing. Monroe writes to U.S. Bank president Nicholas Biddle, introducing and recommending a man by the name of Burrows. From New York, Monroe writes,

''Mr. Burrows who will deliver you this, has expressed a desire that I would introduce him to your acquaintance, according to the knowledge I have of his character, and the impression I entertain of it. At a distant period back, while I held the office of Ch. Magistrate, he was introduced to me by a letter from Govr. Wolcott of Connecticut, in very favorable terms, as a citizen of merit and entitled to the attention of the govt. He reminds me that I acted under the influence of that recommendation, and promoted his objects in Europe, in commerce, by letters to public officers then. Within a few years past, our acquantance [sic] has been renewed, and under circumstances which have confirmed, and [?], this impression first made. I am informed, by the best authority here, that he is engaged extensively in commerce, in both hemispheres, the operations of which are well conducted & attended with success. Viewing him in this light, you will pardon this liberty I take...James Monroe''.

Single page on bifolium measures 7.875'' x 9.875''. Docketing to upper right. Browning along fold, overall very good to near fine condition with bold handwriting. With R&R COA.
