James Madison autograph promissory note signed for $1,000. Note from 1831 is penned by Madison in full, ''$1000 I promise to pay to John C Payne on demand, one thousand dollars this day received on loan, with interest on the same till paid. Given under my hand this first day of April, one thousand eight hundred thirty one. / James Madison''. Madison suffered severe financial stress late in his life, at which time this note was written. Measures 7.5'' x 2.75''. Toning, folds and uneven right and bottom edges. Overall very good condition. With writing on verso, likely in Payne's hand.
