James Garfield autograph letter signed, dated 20 August 1880, the same year he was elected President. Upon U.S. Congressional stationery, Garfield here declines an invitation to attend a reunion of the 10th Indiana Volunteers, writing in part, ''...I should be glad to be present at the reunion of that noble regiment which did such gallant service but my engagements already made render it impossible...J.A. Garfield''. 2pp. letter on one sheet measures 4.75'' x 8''. Toning and soiling to top. Very good condition.
