Hunter S. Thompson typed letter signed, undated but written in September 1969 to his childhood friend Paul Semonin. Thompson is upset that Semonin visited Aspen without telling him. Letter reads in part, ''Dear Dilletante...Thanx for the card, but who are you trying to kid? You came out here and pulled a bad echo of my NYC act -- but without my excuse. Which was at least valid, if not honorable. I got the quick impression that your head has turned to water, or maybe bile. The worst kind of dropout scene -- where the drop creates no noise, no circles in the water. / Which is more a calculated insult than a judgement, but I figured you'd at least come out some afternoon for a bit of fire talk -- for the purging of my own bad useless spirits, as well as yours...We are into different drifts -- and no doubt for different reasons -- but until last month it hadn't occurred to me that we might be heading in different directions. Which is worth talking about, if it's true. Maybe we need a neutral court: How about Chicago, Oct 8-11? I can get a double hotel-room and a car...Let me know. Ciao......[signed] H''. Single page letter on bright orange paper measures 8.5'' x 11''. Folds, else near fine.
