Hunter S. Thompson typed letter boldly signed ''HST'', and also with his hand-annotation to one word. Letter is dated 19 January 1960 when Thompson lived in San Juan, working under the novelist William Kennedy. He writes to his childhood friend Paul Semonin, urging him to come visit. Letter reads in part, ''Horseshit! What are you doing in Louisville; I've written you two long, vital letters c/o [their mutual friend Floyd] Smith in New York, and I refuse to repeat them just because you're bogged down in the old peat-bog. Man will bog. Anyway, get the hell up to NY, digest my letters, send me the material (art) I mentioned, and then get the hell down here. I've accomplished step one (beach house) and am now lukewarm on the trail of a scooter, (step two). Kramer will need illustrator (line drawings, cartoons, etc.) by March -- if the magazine stays on its financial feet -- and you can probably sell the same kind of stuff to the Star. All this is explained in my letters...But take them in the proper order, because things have been moving and shifting at a high rate of speed. But get off your ass and do something. I don't give a damn what it is, but I can smell that real estate-- rotarian stench all the way down here. MOVE! / Or, as they say in never-never land, man must wheel and deal. Also, thanks for the police news, but you had the wrong Dotson. Or was it Dodson? Who gives a goathump, anyway? Rum is $1.50 a bottle here. Sand is free. And when you come, BRING MONEY. / Contemptuously, [signed] HST''. The beach house that Thompson mentions is shown in the book ''Gonzo'', page 62. Single page letter measures 8.5'' x 11''. Paperclip discoloration at upper left and uniform toning, overall very good.
