Twenty volume collection of ''The Writings of Henry David Thoreau'' limited ''manuscript'' edition, with each set containing a handwritten draft by Thoreau from one of his Writings. The handwritten leaf of this edition contains excerpts from Thoreau's ''Journals'', as well as his famous speech, ''What Shall It Profit?'' on the rarity of true intellectual non-conformity. Boston: Houghton Mifflin and Company, 1906, number 501 in the limited edition of 600.
Thoreau's handwritten draft reads in full, with the beginning of the passage added here for context,
A wise man sees ''as clearly the heathenism and barbarity of his own countrymen, as those of the nations to whom his countrymen send missionaries. The Englishman and American are subject to as many national superstitions as the Hindoo & Chinese.
I chance to know but 2-3 intellectual men who are yet so broad & truly liberal - unpledged to any institution or cause that I can think aloud in their society. Most with whom I endeavor to talk...''
Continuing on the verso, Thoreau pens another famous quote regarding the inherent significance of nature, independent of how it interacts with mankind,
These ''things are thoughts [when] man is asleep but ever a petty reference to man - often to Christianity. How much more greatly significant of any fact - sun, moon, or stars - when not referred to man & his needs - but viewed absolutely - I come from attending the funeral of mankind - to attend to a natural phenomenon.''
